Service Description

🌿 Express & Create: Art, Ideas, & the World Around Us Best for ages: 8 & Up Format: Interdisciplinary, process-focused art enrichment Group size: 10–12 students Express & Create is a hands-on art class designed for curious homeschoolers who want to explore the world through art. Each session combines art-making with ideas from art history, science, nature, culture, storytelling, and beyond! Students will discover a rotating variety of artists, art movements, materials, techniques, and creative traditions through hands-on projects and experiments. The goal isn't simply to make a finished project. Students learn through the process of making—experimenting with materials, developing skills, solving creative problems, making artistic choices, and discovering how ideas can be communicated visually. Depending on the session, students might: Explore an artist, art movement, or historical art tradition Investigate art from various cultures & places around the world Connect art-making with science, nature, or literature Learn & experiment with a variety of materials & techniques Develop observational drawing, composition, color, pattern, texture, & other foundational art skills Explore visual storytelling & personal expression Work individually & collaboratively Reflect on their choices, discoveries, & finished work Projects are guided rather than prescriptive: students are introduced to a concept, material, technique, or creative challenge and then given room to experiment and develop their creative voice. Express & Create is for students who are curious about how art works—and how art can help us understand ourselves and the world around us. Class length: 90 minutes Monthly enrollment: $100 per month (4 classes) Materials: All materials included Limited to 12 students. *Make-up sessions available quarterly About the instructor: Reva Smith is an imaginative educator who brings a playful, dynamic, and supportive energy to the studio. As a homeschooling parent of 2 and afterschool educator for youth ages 6-15, she strives to create welcoming spaces where kids and adults alike can be truly themselves. Reva focuses on the joy of the creative process rather than perfection—a philosophy inspired by her studies in pre-art therapy. Her personal artistic passion lies in fiber arts, and she can’t wait to dive into tactile, hands-on experimentation with her students this year!
